Kieran Tierney left Celtic in the summer of 2019 in order to join Arsenal for a £25 million transfer fee, a record that stands to this day. It has been up and down time in London for the Scottish left-back over the years and he is certainly in the middle of a valley right now, having struggled to get into the starting XI for some time.

Tierney only made six starts in the Premier League last season. Thus, it will come as no surprise that he is being linked with a move away from Arsenal this summer.

Newcastle United are rumoured to be the favourites to sign him. But a move to The Magpies has not materialised yet and Eddie Howe’s side have been linked with a few other left-backs recently as well, as it looks like they are keeping their options open.

Amidst all this, there has been some talk of a potential loan move to Celtic this summer. What has Tierney said in the past, when asked about a return to his boyhood club though?

Tierney’s comments about Celtic return emerge

As reported by the Daily Record, speaking in October 2022 on BT’s The Currie Club Tierney said:

"“I think when a player who loves the club leaves there’s always that, ‘what if he comes back’ and you can’t rule anything out. I’m always going to love Celtic.“I’m always going to support Celtic so you never know in football, you genuinely don’t. There was a stage I thought I would never leave Celtic.“You never know what can happen like anything. You need to take it game by game.”"

Tierney returning to Celtic Park would be a shock as well as a statement of intent on the part of the Hoops. A move is extremely unlikely but at the same time, stranger things have happened in football.

If Tierney is unable to find himself a permanent exit from Arsenal in the summer, then a loan move to Celtic for the season might not be the worst idea in the world for all parties involves. In Brendan Rodgers, the club have a manager who he already has worked with in the past to great success and can help him bring his career back on track.
