Celtic are expected to back Brendan Rodgers in the summer transfer window, so that he has the best chance of continuing the club’s dominance in Scottish football and also make an impact in Europe. We have already seen glimpses of their ambition with the signing of Odin Thiago Holm while a deal to bring in Marco Tilio from Melbourne City FC is also believed to be close.

On the other hand, some Celtic players are expected to depart as well. Especially ones who have been struggling for playing time.

One player who falls under that category is Stephen Welsh. The defender has come through the ranks at Celtic and played quite a bit of football at the senior level. But he has not been a regular feature for a while now, having fallen behind the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Carl Starfelt and others in the defensive pecking order.

As a result, a move away in the summer looks likely. And there seems to be no lack of interest in the signature of Welsh.

As reported by the Daily Mail (via Glasgow Live), Welsh is emerging as a target for Hellas Verona. Bologna are also keeping a close eye on the Celtic defender.

It will be interesting to see how things turn out for Welsh this summer. And also, let’s see if his situation changes with Rodgers being in place as the new manager of the club. But as things stand, it is hard to see him being a starter come next season.

Thus, a Celtic exit looks like the most likely route for Welsh at this point of time. In the past, the defender has been the subject of transfer bids from overseas and his future might lie away from Scotland after all.
