It looks like Celtic are close to finalising the return of Brendan Rodgers, as the replacement for Ange Postecoglou. The Northern Irishman has already had a very successful stint in the Parkhead hot seat, winning seven trophies including two trebles. Thus, if he does return, one would expect the Hoops to continue their dominance over Scottish football.
Of course, nothing should be taken for granted. And considering how the Eddie Howe saga turned out a couple of years ago, we should not consider the Rodgers deal done until we see him holding up a Celtic jersey.
Most Rangers fans would view Rodgers coming back as a blow, after how dominant his Celtic side were the last time around. But it looks like Barry Ferguson has a different view on the matter.
Ferguson wrote in his column in the Daily Record:
"It looks like Brendan Rodgers is about to become the new manager of Celtic and if Rangers have anything about them they will be absolutely delighted. Why? Because to become the best you have to beat the best and for my money, Rodgers is the best man Celtic could have appointed to replace Ange Postecoglou. Look, I said a couple of weeks ago that I was disappointed that Postecoglou had left for Spurs. I wanted him to stay at Celtic and was looking forward to seeing how Michael Beale carried the fight to him next season. I had no doubt that Rangers would go toe to toe with them."
Rangers legend makes odd claim about Rodgers’ Celtic return
It will be interesting to see how Beale’s side react if Rodgers does make a return to Parkhead. They certainly came up short in the matches that mattered against Postecoglou’s Celtic in the previous campaign.
Now, one cannot overlook the fact that the Rangers have been strengthening their squad this summer by making new signings, while Celtic have been chasing a new manager. That does give them a bit of an advantage but not much.
Also, Rodgers is someone who has managed at the very highest level. He has found success in the Premier League against the best managers in the game and some even in the history of football. Thus, in a head-to-head comparison with Beale, you would have to give the advantage to the Northern Irishman.
The first thing that Celtic need to do though is get the appointment of Rodgers over the line. And then, they can start preparing for the upcoming campaign.
