Brendan Rodgers has emerged as the favourite to be the next Celtic manager, with Dermot Desmond rumoured to be a big admirer of the Northern Irishman. It is not hard to see why either. He won seven trophies during his first stint in the Parkhead hot seat, and it was during that time that the team was transformed into a treble winning machine.
With Ange Postecoglou leaving the club for Tottenham Hotspur, after winning five trophies in two seasons, Celtic need someone who can build on that success. And Rodgers is certainly someone who knows how to succeed at Parkhead.
Rodgers is without a job right now, having been shown the exit door by Leicester City last season. And rumours over the past few days have suggested that the Northern Irishman is closing in on a return to Celtic.
Leeds United are a team that Rodgers has also been linked with though. But there is some great news in that regard.
Rodgers’ Leeds United stance amid Celtic return rumours
As reported by Yorkshire Evening Post, reports of a last-ditch attempt from Leeds United to sign Rodgers ahead of Celtic are wide of the mark. While the Northern Irishman has not turned the role down, nor has he met with the Elland Road outfit and hasn’t appeared keen on a return to the Championship either.
Thus, that is a boost for Celtic and their chances of bringing back Rodgers to Parkhead. Unless something unexpected happens, it looks like the Northern Irishman will be in the hot seat come next season.
Of course, if the return does indeed happen, it will not be a popular appointment amongst a large section of the Celtic fans. That is due to the manner in which Rodgers left the club back in 2019, in the middle of the season with two trophies still to play for.
