Ange Postecoglou made a big decision by leaving behind everything that he had built up at Celtic to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer. Of course, it did not go down well with the fans. And it is brave move on the part of the Australian, when you consider how things have gone for some of their last few managers, including Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho.
With all due respect to Postecoglou, his name does not carry the same weight as those legendary managers. Thus, just like at Celtic, he will have to win over the Tottenham Hotspur fans as well and prove to them that he is the right man for the job. That is easier said than done when you consider how competitive the Premier League is.
Unsurprisingly, a few Celtic players have been linked with Tottenham Hotspur following Postecoglou’s move to the London club. But he has been sent a clear message about trying to sign some of his former players.
As reported by Football Insider, Alan Hutton said:
"“I have read things about Kyogo, I really think Hatate has had an excellent season, there has been rumours about O’Riley moving.“I think it would be a wrong move if he was to go and sign them.“There are some fans that are not sure about the appointment because of where he has come from and what he has done in the past.“So, if you start bringing down Celtic players, and that is no disrespect to any of them, people would be saying what is going on here because they are looking at a different level of player.“This is a football team that is chasing Champions League in the toughest league in the world.“Yes there could be eyes on them for different clubs down south. But I would be surprised if Ange signs and gets a couple of players to join him.“"
Postecoglou sent blunt message about signing Celtic players
Players like Kyogo Furuhashi, Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley could most probably perform in the Premier League. But them going to Tottenham Hotspur might send a wrong message to both sets of fans.
On one hand, Tottenham Hotspur supporters might not be thrilled with signing players from the Scottish Premiership and would have their doubts about them. On the other hand, Celtic fans would not be happy to see Postecoglou trying to sign some of their best players. The Australian’s spotless reputation has already taken a blow amongst the Parkhead faithful since his exit.
Let’s see what the future holds. Postecoglou’s exit has already been a major blow for Celtic, as they try to fill the huge boots left behind by him this summer. One can only hope that they are able to keep their best players.
