Ange Postecoglou is on the verge of completing a move to Tottenham Hotspur. Having won five trophies in two seasons at Parkhead, the Australian’s exit will be a big blow for Celtic and they will need to find a suitable replacement for him. Of course, that is easier said than done. The Hoops need to get this appointment right though.
Plenty of names have been thrown up as possible candidates for the job. Amongst them, one is that of Jesse Marsch.
Marsch’s last job was at Leeds United. He was shown the exit door earlier in the campaign, but the English club were unable to avoid relegation.
Yet, it looks like Celtic might hold an interest in Marsch. And this is not the first time that they have been linked with the American either. He was rumoured to be a potential candidate for the job in 2021 as well.
Marsch’s comments about Celtic emerge amid links
Marsch’s past comments about Celtic have emerged amid rumours linking him with the Celtic job. As reported by BBC back in 2021, the American had said:
"“I’ve heard [about the links]. It’s an honour for me.“Three or four years ago, being linked with a club like Celtic would literally be an impossibility for me. And now that this is where I am, I always just try to look at it in terms of, ‘what would the project look like?’“Would we have similar ideas in how to build it the right way, invest in the academy, invest in young players and create this development process that I’m talking about? And not just focus on winning.“Obviously I know that when you’re the coach of Celtic, winning is the most important thing.”"
Of course, Marsch had ended up at RB Leipzig back then. The move proved to be a failure though and he did not even last half-a-season at the Bundesliga club.
Then he replaced Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds United and was able to avoid relegated on the final matchday of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign. But when the team found themselves in the middle of a struggle to stay up once again this season, they parted ways with the manager.
Thus, bringing in Marsch would be a big risk for Celtic for sure. He was a grand success at RB Salzburg but then, they have won the Austrian league for ten straight seasons. Thus, there are major doubts over the American at the moment.
