Ange Postecoglou wrote his name down in the history books by guiding Celtic to a domestic treble. Despite how common that has been over the past seven years, not many managers have achieved the feat. A 3-1 win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Hampden Park was enough to clinch the Scottish Cup. Kyogo, Jota and Liel Abada got themselves on the scoresheet.
If this was Postecoglou’s last game in charge of Celtic, then the three scorers on the day felt appropriate. Now, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the Australian.
There have been heavy rumours linking him with a move to Tottenham Hotspur. And it is believed that talks will be held after the Scottish Cup final.
Postecoglou is on a 12 month rolling contract at the moment. So, Celtic do not have much leverage in the matter and the Premier League club would not have to pay a big compensation fee either.
Postecoglou comments on Celtic future after final
As reported by 67 Hail Hail, when talking to several outlets including BBC Scotland after the final, Postecoglou said when asked about the future and whether he would be the Celtic manager come next season:
"“I understand all that, but I’m going to be a little bit selfish here. Not just for myself, but my family and the people around me have all worked really hard to enjoy this moment. As disappointing as that may be for people, that’s what I’m going to do. We’ve worked too hard, whether as players or managers, if I start talking about things that aren’t really important right now to me and the people around me, mate I’m just enjoying this. And I will enjoy it for as long as I can before people drag me away to talk about other things.”"
The manager has remained pretty much silent when it comes to the topic of his future. And that is what has worried Celtic fans more than anything over the past few days. Now all they can do is wait for more news to emerge about the situation.
Postecoglou’s body language at the post-match celebrations did look like that of a man who could be on his way out and someone who was soaking it all in. The fans can only hope for the best.
If Postecoglou does indeed leave in the summer, we must thank him for the job that he has done. He arrived at a time when the team was in a terrible position and guided them back to the top of Scottish football against all odds and expectations.
