Celtic are heading towards the Scottish Cup final but the media focus has not been on their match against Inverness Caledonian Thistle but on the future of Ange Postecoglou instead. Rumours have emerged that Tottenham Hotspur have made the Australian their number one managerial target and plan to hold talks with him after this weekend.
Of course, Celtic fans will be hoping that Postecoglou continues in his role at Parkhead. But the recent rumours are worrying to say the least, and they continue to gain momentum.
The club will need to look for a replacement in case Postecoglou does indeed leave this summer. And the name of David Moyes has been brought up by some.
A Premier League flop has been tipped to be a good replacement for Postecoglou though. It is none other than former Leeds United manager, Jesse Marsch. As reported by Football Scotland, Stephen McGinn said while speaking on Go Radio:
"“I think someone like Jesse Marsch, who’s obviously been linked with the Celtic job before.“He plays that front foot, attacking football which wouldn’t mean wholesale changes in terms of the playing style because that group of Celtic players, it can’t be someone who goes in and plays off set pieces and goes long.“It’s got to be someone who continues this attacking football because a lot of these players have been recruited with that idea so he’s someone who would tick some boxes.”"
Premier League flop tipped to be next Celtic manager
Of course, fans with a keen memory will remember that Marsch was one of the managers linking with the Parkhead job in 2021 before Postecoglou was brought in. Back then, most Celtic fans would have probably been happy if the American was brought in but now, there have to be doubts.
Marsch did a very good job at RB Salzburg. But his career after leaving the Austrian club has not been the best.
He was shown the RB Leipzig exit door less than half a season after joining the Bundesliga giants. And his time at Leeds United was not a success either. Yes, he did manage to avoid relegation with them on the final day of the 2021/22 campaign. But ultimately, he did not last even a year at Elland Road.
Yes, there are stylistic similarities between Marsch and Postecoglou. But one cannot overlook the fact that American has failed to get a tune out of his last two teams. The Australian, on the other hand, has a track record of being successful wherever he has been.
