With the Premiership and the League Cup already in the bag, Celtic will be vying for the treble next month, when they take to the Hampden Park pitch against Inverness CT. It goes without saying that the Hoops would be considered as the favourites against Championship opposition, but their form in recent weeks has been a major cause of concern.
Celtic have only won one of their last four league games. At the same time though, they have been handed a boost, as one of their most important players has returned to training.
Celtic’s biggest issue in recent weeks has been their defence. Of course, the absence of Cameron Carter-Vickers has been a major problem. But so has been that of Alistair Johnston.
There is some good news for Celtic in that regard though. As reported by Sky Sports, Johnston has returned to training ahead of next month’s Scottish Cup final. He is in line to return against Aberdeen.
Celtic player returns to training in Scottish Cup final boost
Celtic have certainly missed the presence of Johnston at right-back. He only joined the club earlier this year but has been a major part of the team since then, and expertly filled the shoes of Josip Juranovic.
Anthony Ralston has played in his absence, but his performances have left quite a bit to be desired. Johnston has not played since picking up a knock against the Rangers in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup in late April.
It goes without saying that Johnston returning to training is great news for Celtic and now, it looks like he will be fit to feature in the Scottish Cup final. Let’s see if the Canadian gets some minutes against Aberdeen to shake off the rust and rediscover some rhythm. Of course, Carter-Vickers won’t be returning this season, having undergone surgery.
