Not all clubs have a history like Celtic. Some clubs only have a very short history with a couple of trophies. The Hoops of course have much more to be proud of, as UEFA have recognised recently. And every time the legendary Lisbon Lions get recognition, it has to be considered a good day.

There’s now talk of a huge potential treble down in England. Manchester City are closing in on the Premier League title and looking to add the FA Cup alongside it when they meet their Manchester United in the final.

Pep Guardiola’s side could add the Champions League to their trophy cabinet as well and claim a historic treble. One that includes the domestic league and cup titles, plus the European Cup or UEFA Champions League.

That has led to an article on UEFA’s official website. And they led it with the fabulous Lisbon Lions of Celtic, who were triumphant on all fronts in the 1966/67 season.

Celtic join 8 other teams with a treble that includes the top European crown:

1966/67: Celtic

1971/72: Ajax

1987/88: PSV Eindhoven

1998/99: Manchester United

2008/09: Barcelona

2009/10: Inter Milan

2012/13: Bayern Munich

2014/15: Barcelona

2019/20: Bayern Munich

The Hoops can go one better than all those teams and Manchester City, if the Citizens claim their treble this season. Celtic are the only team who have a quadruple in their history, including the European Cup or UEFA Champions League. They also won the Scottish League Cup that season. In fact if you add in their Glasgow Cup win, the Bhoys took home every trophy they entered in that fantastic 1966/67 campaign.

As the club hope to secure another historic domestic treble by defeating Inverness CT in the Scottish Cup final next month, it’s great to see UEFA recognising those past achievements. Very often in football, things are forgotten way too quickly and deserve more respect and recognition.
