Celtic had nothing riding on the result of the last Glasgow Derby of the season, having already sealed the league. Unfortunately, they played like such a team as well. It was an uninspiring performance in every department and the Rangers managed to get themselves a 3-0 victory at Ibrox.
Ultimately, the result means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Michael Beale’s side will still finish trophyless. And Celtic will go for a potential treble next month when they take on Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park.
The reaction of the Rangers and their fans after the win might be perfect for Celtic though. The ‘you’d think they won the league’ often sounds like a bitter excuse from losing supporters. But on this occasion, the glove fits the hand.
At the end of the day, if the result does give the Rangers a sense that they are much closer to Celtic now, than they had been all season, then that might play right into the hands of Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Rangers reaction to Glasgow Derby win is perfect for Celtic
Celtic were nowhere near full strength at Ibrox. They were missing several key players through injury, or giving them rest.
And to be honest, Postecoglou had no reason to risk his players, if there was even a slight doubt about their fitness. Every Glasgow Derby is important. As a manager, the Australian has to take emotion out of the equation and make decisions keeping the bigger picture in mind.
At the end of the day, it would have been sweet to go an entire season undefeated against the Rangers. But winning a treble will be much sweeter, and that has to be Celtic’s focus right now.
On the other hand, a loss against the Rangers should keep the players on their toes. Next time around, they should be much hungrier to win.
