Celtic have been excellent when it comes to identifying players who would fit in Ange Postecoglou’s plans. That has been one of the biggest reasons why they have enjoyed so much success under the management of the Australian over the past two seasons. They won a Premiership and League Cup double in the previous campaign and are in the running for a treble this time around.

Of course, that does not mean that every signing that Celtic have made during the time of Postecogl0u at Parkhead has worked out. One which certainly has not was the move to bring in James McCarthy in the summer of 2021.

It quite clearly has proven to be a mistake as McCarthy has barely featured over the past two seasons and also struggled to remain fit. And it might be time to part ways.

As reported by Football Insider, Celtic are planning to accept an offer for McCarthy this summer. The Hoops are believed to have been trying to find the midfielder a new club since last year but a move has failed to materialise.

It is safe to say that McCarthy does not have much of a role in Postecoglou’s plans right now. He has never really found his feet at Parkhead. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has made 5 appearances and played 62 minutes of football this season.

Celtic might have a difficult time finding McCarthy a new club though. He has barely played in recent times, has a long injury history and is 32 years of age as well.

Thus, McCarthy is not the type of player expected to be in high demand in the summer. It has never felt like the right move for Celtic and a player who would fit into Postecoglou’s style of play.
