Celtic have been home to a lot of legends over the years, and one Manchester United hero has admitted that he would have loved to play for the Hoops. There appears to have been some interest at one point of time as well but ultimately, it never ended up happening. One can only wonder what could have been at this point as he has been retired for close to two decades.
Lee Sharpe came through the ranks at Torquay United before making a move to Manchester United in 1988 as a teenager. And he started to contribute for the Red Devils from the time that he was 17 years of age.
He went on to become a key player for Manchester United during the early part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s run as the manager of the club. He would go on to win three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, a League Cup and a few other trophies during his eight years at Old Trafford.
Sharpe would leave in 1996 to join Leeds United. He also went on to play for teams like Portsmouth, Bradford City, Sampdoria and more but was never able to reach the heights that he had done at Manchester United.
Manchester United legend was interested in Celtic move
As reported by The Scottish Sun, Sharpe said about Celtic:
"“Yeah, I think there was a little bit of interest at one point.“I would have loved to have played for Celtic, to be fair. My home club Aston Villa as well. But it never happened.“I just liked Celtic, liked the kit. I remember seeing them as a kid. You’re either one or the other. It was probably about the kit.”"
Of course, it would have been all about timing when it comes to a move for Sharpe. He was an excellent player for Manchester United. But then, his career after leaving the club was not nearly as impressive.
Thus, a move in the latter portions of Sharpe’s career would not have made much sense for Celtic and probably would not have been successful. On the other hand, when he left Manchester United for Leeds United in 1996, the Hoops probably would have had a tough time matching the transfer fee. They had signed Alan Stubbs the same summer, for a club record transfer fee believed to be around £4 million.
