Ange Postecoglou’s achievements at Celtic Park have not gone unnoticed and it is only natural that he has been linked with a move down south for a while now. Clubs like Leeds United, Everton, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and a few others were rumoured to hold an interest in him. And the latest team who seem to be keeping an eye on the Australian are Chelsea.
Chelsea are going through a terrible campaign. They have nothing left to play for and this could very well turn out to be their worst season of this century.
The club have shown Graham Potter the exit door already, replacing him with Frank Lampard as caretaker manager till the end of the campaign. In the summer, they are expected to appoint a new head coach. And it looks like Postecoglou is an option that they have their eyes on.
As reported by The Guardian, Postecoglou is on the shortlist of candidates to become Chelsea’s next head coach. The club are leaning towards Mauricio Pochettino though.
Celtic captain sends clear message amid Postecoglou to Chelsea rumours
Celtic captain, Callum McGregor, clearly wants Postecoglou to remain at the club. As reported by the Daily Record, he said about the manager:
"“He’s been fantastic here, he’s had a really good tenure and we want to keep him. His work is outstanding and he’s a good person as well. That’s the type of people you want to work with and we would be delighted to keep him.“His work speaks for itself. That’s going to get people talking but I think his full focus is on the job at hand. If we can keep him we will be delighted.”"
Postecoglou is a sensational coach. There is no doubt about that. But unsurprisingly, the reaction of the Chelsea fans to the rumours of him being a candidate for the Stamford Bridge has been negative. That will be nothing new to the Australian though, who faced questions in Scotland as well.
We all know how that turned out. He delivered a double in his first season at Celtic, against all odds and expectations. And a treble is still on the table this time around. Thus, surely every fan would want to see him remain at Parkhead for as long as possible.
