Celtic have a number of players in their ranks who might have to look towards the exit door in the summer. That is just the reality of the situation at Parkhead. The squad is already stacked and the Hoops are expected to strengthen further, as they head towards another potential Champions League group stage campaign.

One player who has spent the season out on loan is Mikey Johnston. He is currently at Portuguese club, Vitoria SC. He has done a good job there and even impressed fans recently with his performances for the Republic of Ireland national team.

The best news is that it seems like he has left his injury problems behind him and is back to playing consistent football once again. So, many are hoping that Johnston will be given a chance in Ange Postecoglou’s side next season.

On the other hand, Frank McAvennie seems to believe that Johnston has got to leave the club. As reported by Football Insider, the former Celtic player said about the situation:

"“It might be a new chapter for him. I have said he has got to leave because he has been there for too long and he has not established himself. Ange is a football guy, he would not want anyone to sit on the bench.“"

Johnston was one of the most highly rated players at Celtic while coming through the ranks. And while easy to forget, he did make a very promising start to life at the senior level as well.

Many people were even predicting that he would develop into a 20-goal-a-season winger eventually. But it did not turn out to be the case, as he struggled with one injury after another and it derailed his career for a good few years.

Now, he seems back to playing good football as well. But it is hard to see a role for Johnston in this current Celtic team, which is stacked from top to bottom. If some players end up leaving in the summer, then it could be a very different story though.
