Martin O’Neill is a Celtic icon. The manager guided the Hoops to some of their biggest successes in recent memory. He managed several other clubs and even the Republic of Ireland national team during the course of his storied career and at one point of time was considered as one of the top managers in the game.
It has been a while since we have seen O’Neill in the dugout though. His last role came back in 2019, at Nottingham Forest.
Thus, the feeling was that at 71 years of age, his managerial career was over. But there is an unexpected twist in the tale. It looks like not only could he make a return in management but at the Premier League level as well. Something that not many people would have expected.
As reported by Independent, Leicester City are considering bringing in an experienced caretaker in order to stay up in the Premier League, with O’Neill and Rafa Benitez among the names discussed.
Celtic legend eyed for unexpected managerial return
Leicester City recently showed the exit door to another former Celtic manager in the form of Brendan Rodgers. The Northern Irishman had led them to a lot of success during his time there, including an FA Cup and a Community Shield triumph. But they find themselves in a relegation struggle right now.
Of course, O’Neill has managed Leicester City in the past as well. He was the manager of the club before he arrived at Celtic. And he delivered silverware for the Foxes as well, winning the League Cup on two occasions.
It remains to be seen if O’Neill does indeed make a return to management and Leicester City or not. The Foxes find themselves sitting at 19th in the Premier League table currently, two points away from safety with nine games to go.
