With the international break in place, some much welcome attention had been focussed on the Scottish Women’s Professional League match on Monday night between the two Glasgow rivals, Celtic and the Rangers. The game ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw.

The focus was even greater given that Sky Sports were televising the match live. And there was no lack of drama on the night either.

While it might have been a 1-1 game, but the very late 99th minute equaliser pulled Celtic level after the Rangers had taken the lead in the first half itself. The result leaves both teams lagging behind league leaders Glasgow City by a significant margin.

A controversial post-match incident was caught by the cameras. As reported by the Daily Record, Craig McPherson, one of the Rangers coaches, appeared to ‘headbutt’ the Celtic women manager, Fran Alonso.

While Glasgow derby matches are always tough affairs you can only be disappointed to see such an incident take place, especially involving a coach, who is there to lead and set an example.

Such incidents do nothing to help change decisions about away crowds, something which has been a topic of discussion in Scottish footballing circles for quite some time as well. But despite the nature of the incident and how much criticism it has ended up receiving from around the football world, there has been no official statement or comment from the Rangers regarding the matter.

It remains to be seen if that ends up changing over the coming days. It is believed that the incident is under investigation. All we can hope is that appropriate actions are taken regarding the matter. There is no place for such incidents in the game of football and it only gives everyone involved a bad name as a result of it.
