Celtic and the Rangers share one of the most intense rivalries in all of football, and that is true at all levels of the game. The club’s women’s teams took part in a match recently, which ended under the most extraordinary of circumstances. In the 99th minute of the match, Caitlin Hayes managed to score an equaliser and it ultimately ended 1-1.

The 99th minute goal from Hayes made sure that Celtic remained in second position in the Scottish Women’s Premier League table.

Tempers seemed to flare after the match and unfortunately, things took a wrong turn. The incidents have caused a lot of controversy all around the game.

As reported by the Daily Record, Rangers coach Craig McPherson appeared to ‘headbutt’ Celtic women boss Fran Alonso at the end of the fixture. A spokesperson for the Hoops said about the incident that took place:

"“Clearly this is a hugely concerning incident, falling well below any acceptable standard.“We understand the matter is now being investigated and it will be up to all relevant authorities to take any appropriate action.”"

It goes without saying that actions like this do not have any place in the game of football. We can only hope that appropriate actions will be taken in the aftermath of the event and it remains to be seen what the results of the investigation turn out to be.

It was not a good sight to see though. And while there is clearly a rivalry between the two Glasgow sides, it should have never come down to this.

Things like this only take away from the action on the pitch, and it definitely did on this occasion. A 99th equaliser from Hayes under these circumstances should have been what grabbed headlines but instead, they were dominated by what the Ibrox coach ended up doing in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw. It remains to be seen what comes out of all of this and investigations are believed to be underway already.
