It would be safe to say that Celtic fans are not too fond of Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool legend managed the Rangers for quite a few years. And while it would be a stretch to call his time at Ibrox a success, considering that he managed to guide them to only one piece of silverware, it was a big one nevertheless and prevented the Hoops from completing 10IAR.
Since then, Gerrard has moved away from Ibrox. He left the Rangers in the middle of last season in order to take the Aston Villa job.
It would be safe to say that things did not go according to plan in Birmingham for Gerrard. After a decent start at Aston Villa, his side clearly lost their way and he was shown the exit door earlier in this campaign. He finds himself without a club at the moment.
Gerrard recently took part in a charity match at Anfield involving Legends teams of Liverpool and Celtic. And the former Reds captain created a bit of controversy, with his celebrations in front of the travelling support, after scoring from a penalty kick.
Gerrard slammed for his antics against Celtic
Richard Keys wrote in his blog regarding the matter:
"Perhaps he’s given up believing that he’s got a coaching career, but if he hasn’t, I firmly believe he’s definitely got to give those games up. Either way – he shouldn’t be taunting Celtic fans as he did after scoring. I know it’s hard and I know they’d been on at him all through the game – but he’s a big boy and he knows it’s all part of the gig."
It would be safe to say that it was not the time nor the place to bring out the celebrations. It was a match organised in order to raise money for good causes in order to help people in need.
Overlooking Gerrard’s antics on the day though, it was good to see so many Celtic legends pull on the Hoops again. They might have lost against the Liverpool team on the day but the match was hardly about the result.
Hopefully we will get to see more matches of these kind in the future. And hopefully there won’t be anyone celebrating goals in front of opposition fans the next time around.
