There is history between Celtic and Steven Gerrard. Quite a lot of it. The Englishman managed the Rangers for several years. It was not a very successful spell by any stretch of the imagination, as he was successful in winning only one trophy in Scotland. That was the big one though, the league title that prevented the Hoops from winning a historic 10IAR.
Since then, Gerrard has moved on from the Rangers. He left in the middle of last season in order to take the Aston Villa job.
Things did not go as smoothly there, as he would have been hoping for. And Gerrard was shown the exit door by Aston Villa earlier this season.
Gerrard came across Celtic fans once again recently, as he was a part of the team of Liverpool legends that took on their counterparts in the Hoops, in a charity match at Anfield. And there was some controversy on the day, as the Englishman celebrated in front of the travelling supporters after scoring from the penalty spot.
Gerrard gives credit to Celtic fans at Anfield
While Gerrard might not have made himself popular with Celtic fans with his celebrations on the day, he did give them credit after the match. As reported by Liverpool’s official website, the club legend said:
"“It wouldn’t be so successful without the support of the fans, and to be fair to Celtic they’ve turned up in their numbers today and it’s been a really enjoyable day.”"
At the end of the day, it is important to remember that this match was organised for a good cause. All the proceeds from the game will go to various programmes and help those in need.
It was also great to see so many club legends pull on the Hoops once again, after such a long time, and while it might not have been a winning effort from Celtic, that was not the important thing on the day. Hopefully, we will get to see similar matches in the near future as well.
