Steven Gerrard managed to find the back of the net for the Liverpool legends in a charity match against their Celtic counterpoints. The Englishman was successful in converting from a spot-kick. His celebrations after that created quite a bit of controversy though and did not leave the travelling supporters happy.

Of course, Celtic fans are not too fond of Gerrard in the first place, as he was the manager of the Rangers for a number of years. The Ibrox club might have won just one trophy during his time in Scottish football, but that was a big one for the Hoops, as it prevented them from winning 10IAR.

Thus, there were already question marks about what kind of a reception Gerrard would get from the travelling supporters at Anfield. And the Englishman did not help himself with the celebrations.

Gerrard explained his actions after the match. As reported by The Scotsman, the Liverpool legend said:

"“It was definitely a penalty.“Martin Skrtel’s excellent bursting through like a marauding midfielder. Stonewall penalty. There was only one taker from there and that’s me, in front of the Celtic fans. A little bit of pressure, I waited for (Artur Boruc) to go, and you have to milk it. I’ve had so much stick off them so they can have a bit back. There you go.”"

It is not hard to understand why Gerrard might have been keen to make a point to the Celtic fans, but this might not have been the time or place for the celebrations. This was a charity match arranged for a good cause and that spirit should have been maintained.

It is what it is though. Ultimately, it turned out to be a decent outing and it was great to see so many legends pull on the Hoops once again, after such a long time. It would have been even sweeter to see them get a win at Anfield, but then, the result was not important on the day.

All proceeds raised from the match went towards a variety of good causes. And let’s hope we can see many of these legends in a Celtic shirt sometime in the future again.
