When Celtic appointed Ange Postecoglou as manager in the summer of 2021, it was not a popular move. Most fans were left unconvinced. The Australian might have enjoyed success elsewhere, but he had never even managed a top flight club in Europe. On the other hand, Rangers supporters were delighted with the situation.
Things change very quickly in football though. And that is exactly what has happened in Glasgow. Celtic are once again the dominant force in Scottish football, while the Rangers are back playing catch up and struggling at that.
Postecoglou’s team won the Premiership and League Cup double last season. They already have the first piece of silverware in the bag this time around, and are still competing for the other two. Thus, a potential treble is still on the cards.
Postecoglou has gone from being an unknown to a cult favourite amongst Celtic fans. As reported by GIVEMESPORT, Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge said:
"“Obviously, there was a lot of arrogance before when he was appointed with people saying: ‘who is this guy? He’s come from Japan, and no one watches Japanese football.’“But no one watched Japanese football when Arsene Wenger took the Arsenal job. He’s just done so well; he’s really taken Celtic to two new levels.“So, that would be my hope, if I was a Rangers supporter, that maybe clubs look to him and he departs, but then he seems incredibly happy at the moment. He’s become a bit of an icon up there in such a short space of time.”"
Sky Sports man makes brilliant claim about Celtic boss
Of course, Rangers fans cannot wait to see the back of Postecoglou now. But they might have to wait a while for that to happen.
Postecoglou has already been linked with a long list of clubs down south, and continues to be so. But he has stayed put at Parkhead for the time being and continues to guide them towards one success after another.
The Aussie manager already has three trophies in the bag from his time in Scotland and there could very well be more on the way. The Hoops are leading the league by nine points and are in the semis of the Scottish Cup as well.
Postecoglou might not have been a popular appointment in the eyes of the fans. But these days, they can only hope that he remains at Parkhead for as long as possible.
