Ange Postecoglou has never looked like a fan of how VAR has been implemented in the Scottish game and has questioned the effect that it has on the flow and momentum of a game. Celtic are believed to have met with the Scottish FA on more than one occasion to discuss the system and its use.
Celtic are not the only club who have been affected by VAR though. There have been several other managers, who have complained about it as well and questioned some of the decisions made using it.
It was only in October of last year that VAR was introduced in Scottish football. But it has already led to quite a bit of controversy. And finally, it looks like the SFA might be considering making some changes to the system.
As reported by BBC, the Scottish FA are considering using specialist video assistant referees as one of several options to improve the use of the system in the top flight. A similar solution is believed to be under consideration in England, Spain, and Italy as well.
SFA consider VAR changes after complaints from Celtic and other Premiership clubs
As things stand now, officials switch between refereeing matches and acting as VAR. A specialist will not referee any matches though.
On paper, that does sound like a decent enough idea. But once again, it will all come down to execution. That is what has been missing till now.
VAR was brought into the Scottish game to make sure that the narrative was not dominated by the decisions made by referees. But in many ways, it has ended up having an opposite effect and has not really had much of a positive impact on the game, except for a right decision here and there. It is clear that changes are needed and quickly.
