Celtic might be earning a lot of plaudits for how well they have done in the transfer market lately. But that was not always the case. In fact, their poor summer window in 2020 was one of the biggest reasons behind the campaign that they went on to have, finishing trophyless and 25 points behind the Rangers in the league, ending all hopes of 10IAR months before the season had concluded.

David Turnbull was the only player signed in that summer transfer window, who went on to make a positive contribution for Celtic. Otherwise, there was really nothing to write home about.

One of the players who was brought in that summer was Vasilis Barkas. There were high hopes as well, as it was believed that the club shelled out a transfer fee around £5 million to sign him from AEK Athens. Clearly, the hope was that they were solving their goalkeeping issue for years to come.

Reality turned out to be very different though, as Barkas struggled to make his mark at the club. The hope was that he would find his feet in his second season at the club, with the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, but that was not to be. Joe Hart was signed in 2021 and established himself as the starter.

Thus, after a terrible run at Parkhead, Barkas was sent out on loan last summer to Dutch club FC Utrecht. The Greek goalkeeper has proven to be a surprise package there though.

Barkas has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Eredivisie this season. It is clear that he has rediscovered his confidence and should be given a second chance at Celtic.

Despite a couple of very good seasons, Hart is not the long-term solution between the posts for the Hoops. Celtic are still looking for someone to fill that role. So why not give Barkas another chance after his dazzling form in the Netherlands?
