Celtic have a stacked squad at this point of time and that is one of the biggest reasons why they have been so successful this season till now, only suffering one domestic defeat as things stand. Whenever somebody has been injured or unavailable, Ange Postecoglou has had players available to step in and take their place in the team.
On the other hand, the depth has also meant that there have been some very talented players who have not gotten the chances that they might feel they deserve. And in some cases, in might be best for both parties to part ways in the summer.
The name of David Turnbull might fall under that category. The only success story from the disaster summer transfer window of 2020, the Scottish midfielder had initially looked like someone who would become a mainstay in the middle of the park for years to come.
He has never looked like the right fit in Postecoglou’s style of football though. And with the likes of Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, Aaron Mooy, Matt O’Riley and Tomoki Iwata, all ahead of Turnbull in the midfield pecking order, it might be time for him to consider his options.
Celtic first-team player must leave the club next summer
According to stats from Transfermarkt, Turnbull has made 29 appearances and played just 1026 minutes of football this season, scoring and assisting 5 times each in the process.
Recently, rumours also broke out that Celtic could be looking to bring in another midfielder in the summer. Thus, at this point of time, the writing might be on the wall for Turnbull.
He is a good player without doubt and has a lot of great qualities. But at this stage of his career, it does not feel like sitting on the bench most weeks is the right path for Turnbull. So an exit might suit both club and player.
