Celtic marched to victory against Hearts away at Tynecastle Park, winning by a 3-0 scoreline and keeping their treble hopes alive. The Hoops have already won the League Cup, are leading the Premiership by nine points and are now in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup as well. Now, it is important for them to finish the campaign in the best manner possible.
There was an unfamiliar name on the scoresheet against Hearts, as Cameron Carter-Vickers got his first goal of the season. But while the American international might not find the back of the net often, he has been absolutely immense at the back.
To be honest, there is very little doubt about who the best defender in the Scottish Premiership is right now. Carter-Vickers was already superb last season, but he has taken things up a notch this time around and been a class apart.
There are some who feel that Carter-Vickers’ contributions go under the radar. But it is clear that Ange Postecoglou does not agree with that theory. As reported by the Daily Record, the Celtic manager said:
"“I don’t know about that.“I’d say he’s probably the best defender in the league and if anyone disputes that, I’m happy to put up an argument.“I don’t think he goes under the radar at all. He’s been an outstanding player for us over the last 18 or so months. He’s a guy who’s constantly working hard at his game and improving. It was great for him to get a goal today because defenders love these kinds of things. But it’s what he does for us at the other end that’s really important.”"
Celtic boss shuts down Carter-Vickers claim
One could argue that Carter-Vickers has been the best signing that Celtic have made during the time of Postecoglou as manager. And just think about what kind of territory that covers.
The likes of Kyogo, Jota, Reo Hatate and others have all had downturns in form. But Carter-Vickers has been the only one who has constantly been one of the best performers on the pitch.
Of course, these kind of performances are expected to draw the attention of clubs abroad. But the fans will be hoping that Carter-Vickers remains at Parkhead for as long as possible. If he does, he has every chance of going down as a Celtic legend, with the way he is going.
