Celtic have pulled off a transfer masterstroke by signing Alistair Johnston. It is already clear, even though the Canadian international has only been at Parkhead a few months. In that short period of time, he has nailed on his spot in the starting XI though and made sure that the Hoops do not feel the absence of Josip Juranovic, who left in January to join Union Berlin.
Many felt that a key player like Juranovic leaving in the middle of the season would be a huge blow to Celtic’s title hopes. Till now, Johnston has done a wonderful job of taking the place of the Croatian international though.
And he showed another side to his game against the Rangers in the Scottish League Cup final. Not only did he put in a solid defensive display but he was not afraid to mix it up with the opposition either.
One such incident saw him get in the face of Borna Barisic. As reported by The Scottish Sun, Johnston told Sky Sports about the matter:
"“I think it’s important, not only for ourselves, but for our fanbase that we show that it is more than just a football match.“We understand there’s a lot that goes on between the history of these two clubs and it’s important that we don’t get pushed around on the scoreline or on the pitch.“I take that with a bit of pride and it’s always something that’s been in my DNA.“I like to mix it up a bit and I take a lot of joy in that, especially as a defender.“So whenever there’s an opportunity or if I feel like someone’s trying to take advantage of one of our super technical players, then I’m going to go in there and stand up for them.“That just shows the unity and the family spirit that we have at this club right now.”"
Celtic player makes sensational claim about actions against Rangers
That is exactly what Celtic fans would like to hear from Johnston. It shows that he is not willing to be pushed around and ready to step up for his teammates as well if the situation calls up for it.
It is very clear that Celtic have recruited well, when it comes to Johnston. He has not had any problem coming straight into the starting XI and seems to have the right attitude to be a long-term success at Parkhead.
Of course, there are certain aspects of his game where he can get even better. But it is worth remembering that he is 24 years of age and can get better with time. As it is, he is already contributing a lot to this team and will hopefully continue to do so in the future as well.
