Celtic have had several top quality players come through the ranks at the club over the years. The Scottish transfer record is current held by one such player, Kieran Tierney. But before him, there was another star to come through the Hoops’ youth ranks, who had held that record. That is none other than Aiden McGeady.
McGeady rose through the ranks at Celtic before breaking into the senior team. And there, he managed to establish himself as a star as well.
During his peak, McGeady was without doubt one of the best players in all of Scotland. And as a result, when he left Celtic in 2009 for a £9.5 million transfer fee, that set the Scottish record at that point of time.
Of course, McGeady currently finds himself back in Scotland, with Hibernian. But he recently suffered an injury which is set to keep him out of action for months at the very least and there is a possibility that it could potentially spell the end of his playing career as well.
Former Celtic star’s playing career might be over after recent injury
As reported by the Daily Record, Hibernian manager Lee Johnson said regarding the situation of McGeady:
"“It’s a tough one. We haven’t got the exact timescale yet, but he went to see a specialist on Thursday and they’re just deciding or not whether the hamstring requires surgery. Either way, it’s definitely going to be four months, and potentially six months if that surgery is required.“I’m due to have a conversation with Aiden on the big picture stuff and we really just want to help him now. Whatever he decides, if he wants to make a full return to playing then absolutely we’ll support that.“If he decided different then we’ll support that and start him on a different journey. Inevitably, I think he’ll be spinning a few plates.”"
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for McGeady. One can only hope that he recovers as soon as possible. And then, if he decides to return to the pitch, then hopefully he will get the chance to do that. He is 36 years of age now, set to turn 37 next month, and pretty much in the twilight.
Most players do not want to go out on the back of an injury though. Thus, it would not come as a major surprise if McGeady did try to make a comeback. Whatever decision it is that he ends up taking, we can only wish him the best of luck.
