There was a tremendous amount of hype surrounding the League Cup final between Celtic and the Rangers. Ange Postecoglou’s side had been dominating Scottish football for a while, but many felt that they were set to meet their match in Michael Beale’s team, who had not tasted defeat since his arrival as manager a few months back.
Unfortunately for the Rangers, that run came to an end at Hampden Park. Celtic were the better team in almost all departments on the day and got themselves a deserving a 2-1 victory.
The scoreline does not really reflect the gap that was there between the two teams on the day. Celtic were comfortably better and could have scored three, four or more, if they had taken their chances in front of goal.
Thus, most people would agree, that as things stand, there is a gap between the two Glasgow teams. Not if you ask John Lundstram though. As reported by the Daily Record, the Rangers player said about the matter:
"“It is one game, they turned up and we didn’t. I think the combination for that didn’t complement each other well. It looks like there is a massive gap but I don’t think there is a massive gap. It is one game and looked like that at the weekend.”"
Lundstram makes Celtic claim despite losing final
The fact that Celtic not only won the League Cup final over the Rangers but are also nine points ahead of them in the Premiership, and are the defending champions in the league on top of that, would suggest that there is a bit of a gap between the two teams as things stand.
At the same time, the Rangers have managed to get the better of Celtic only once over the course of the past year or so. On the other hand, Celtic have managed to defeat them on four occasions.
Lundstram is free to have his opinion on the matter though. For Celtic, what matters is that they finish the season strong and bring more silverware to Parkhead. A treble is a real possibility.
