Strange things often happen in football. But even then, it is hard to imagine that there are some rumours which have much possibility of coming true. The latest one surrounding Steven Gerrard certainly falls under that category and has drawn hilarious reactions on social media from Celtic fans.

Gregory Vignal played alongside Gerrard at Liverpool and joined the Rangers’ coaching team when his former skipper was the manager at Ibrox. The Englishman eventually left in the middle of the season, months after winning the Premiership, to take the Aston Villa job.

Gerrard’s time in Birmingham was not a great one though, with his managerial skills and experience tested and found wanting. After less than a year in the hot seat, he was shown the exit door by Aston Villa.

As reported by the Scottish Daily Express, Vignal said about Gerrard and his future in management:

"“I think he is strong enough mentally to start a new project. Why not Paris Saint-Germain? They have been talking about him.”"

Celtic fans blown away by bizarre Gerrard rumour

It is safe to say that that is not what anybody expected to hear regarding the future of Gerrard, after his failed stint at Aston Villa.

It’s hard to understand what might attract PSG to Gerrard, as they chase the ultimate Champions League trophy they so much desire. He may have won it as a player, but you can’t imagine it’s his managerial record of one trophy at Ibrox. Or his underwhelming spell at Aston Villa, which ended much quicker than anybody could have expected when the appointment was made.

Big name managers have struggled at PSG. And it is hard to imagine Gerrard would succeed. A place where the likes of Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Carlo Ancelotti and several others failed to deliver the Champions League title.

On the contrary, it would be a surprise if Gerrard’s next job is even at the Premier League level, after how things turned out at Aston Villa.
