When Celtic signed Aaron Mooy in the summer, a lot of fans were not convinced. The Australian midfielder had spent the past couple of years at Shanghai Port and did not play a lot of football there either. As a result, the decision to bring him in was seen by many as a step in sideward direction.
Mooy has proven the critics wrong over his time at Celtic though. Yes, he did start slow and took some time to reach full fitness. But now, he is playing at a very high level and is in contention for the best player in Scotland this season.
It is safe to say that Celtic fans are delighted with Mooy as well. When he was brought in, the hope was that he would be a solid contributor from the bench. Instead, he has managed to establish himself as an unlikely starter.
In a Q&A session on Celtic’s official Twitter, Mooy was asked what about the club and Ange Postecoglou convinced him to join and he said:
"“Celtic’s a massive club, everyone knows about the club. I worked with the manager before and I was excited by the football they were playing. The stadium and the fans too. What makes Celtic special is the fans, so I’m trying to enjoy it and take it all in.”"
Mooy makes sensational claim about life at Celtic
Mooy has already gotten his first taste of silverware at Celtic. The club won the Scottish League Cup final, with a 2-1 victory over the Rangers in the final, thanks to a brace from Kyogo Furuhashi. Mooy was a starter on the day.
While the signing of Mooy might have not celebrated by all, most of the club’s fans certainly want him to stay beyond this season after seeing what he is capable of. The Australian midfielder is rumoured to have an option to extend his deal by a year.
One can only hope that he takes it. He is certainly enjoying his time at Celtic, and continues to be getting better every passing week. Long may this run continue as well.
