Rangers lost the Scottish League Cup final by a 2-1 scoreline after two Kyogo Furuhashi goals handed Celtic the title for the second straight season. But it looks like the Ibrox side might have taken their pettiness to the next level during the match as well, in what seems like a strange move to the say the least.
It’s quite common for teams to wear a special and unique version of their shirts at finals. On Sunday for the Scottish League Cup final the Rangers’ shirt was certainly different.
The Rangers’ shirts didn’t follow the same approach as those for Celtic. The front of the Hoops’ shirts carried the words: Viaplay Cup Final 2022/23, Rangers v Celtic, Sunday 26 February 2023.
Whereas the Rangers shirt had added, Viaplay Cup Final and the date around the club crest. And that is because, as reported by the Express, they refused to print the details of their Viaplay Cup final on their shirts over the weekend to avoid having ‘Celtic’ on their strips.
Rangers took pettiness against Celtic to next level in League Cup final
It seems quite a petty approach and you have to wonder at the mindset behind this. Their odd approach continued with the very awkward looking Rangers post match debrief from Michael Beale, which took place on the pitch immediately after their defeat.
And their whole team took off down the tunnel with their second place medals before Celtic went up to be awarded their winning medals. Another step against traditions in the eyes of many.
For the Celtic players and fans the match will be full of great memories and the shirt with its commemorative stitching plays its part in presenting those. Perhaps on balance, the Rangers side don’t want to remember any of it at all. After all, a cup final defeat against their eternal rivals must hurt.
