Michael Beale has been no stranger to controversy since his appointment as Rangers manager. Whether that be due to his ‘lucky man’ claim about Ange Postecoglou. Or his recent comments about Chris Sutton and his time at Chelsea. And now, he has talked once again about Celtic’s transfer activity in recent times.
Celtic have made several additions to their squad over the past four transfer windows. At the same time though, it is worth pointing out that it was more of a necessity than a luxury.
In the summer of 2021, the club saw key players like Scott Brown, Odsonne Edouard, Kristoffer Ajer and Ryan Christie leave. Several other loanees, who had starting roles, departed as well. As a result, the depth was paper thin, and during Postecoglou’s first six months at Parkhead, and often, he had to fit in players out of their natural positions just to make up the numbers on the pitch.
But as reported by The Scottish Sun, asked to clarify comments he made about Postecoglou being a ‘lucky’ manager, Beale told BBC Sportsound:
"“Clearly we are not going to spend as much as our rivals who have shown in every window since I have been in Scotland that they spend the most in this country.“That certainly wasn’t a slight on Ange. He comes across as a good guy and I like the way his team plays.“But probably in the last 12 months he has spent more than Steven did in three and a half years.”"
Beale takes another dig at Celtic before Scottish League Cup final
It is safe to say that it will be interesting to calculate if Celtic have spent more over the past twelve months than Steven Gerrard did during his time at Ibrox. Rangers certainly did make quite a few additions to their squad over that period of time. At the same time, one must keep an eye on the profits and losses as well, of course.
Celtic have certainly seen quite a few of their players leave for big transfer fees. Also the likes of Tom Rogic, Nir Bitton, Josip Juranovic and Giorgos Giakoumakis have left in recent times.
Whatever maybe the case, all of this will be out of the window when the two Glasgow rivals take to the Hampden Park pitch in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday. Let’s see which team comes out on top.
