Celtic have shown a great hunger to continue strengthening their squad during the time of Ange Postecoglou as manager. It feels like the club are desperate to avoid a repeat of the disaster that was the 2020/21 campaign, when they had blown the chance to win 10IAR and finished 25 points behind the Rangers in the league as well as trophyless overall.
Celtic have added relentlessly to their squad over the course of the past four transfer windows. And that has meant that a squad that was paper thin not too long ago, is now stacked in almost all areas of the pitch.
One role where they remain a bit light on options though is defensive midfield. Tomoki Iwata arrived in January and it remains to be seen how he does in Scotland. On the other hand, the club cut short the loan deal of Oliver Abildgaard.
As we saw in the Champions League this season, Celtic could do with a top quality defensive midfielder, especially against big teams. And interestingly, reports coming out of Greece have linked them with Dimitrios Kourbelis recently.
Celtic must sign €2 million player on free transfer next summer
Rated at a transfer value of around €2 million, Kourbelis is the current captain of Panathinaikos. He has represented Greece at the international level on numerous occasions as well.
His current deal with Panathinaikos runs out at the end of the current season though. And it looks unlikely that he will end up extending his deal with the Greek club.
As a result, there could be a good chance for Celtic to sign the veteran defensive midfielder for free next summer. And it is an opportunity that they should not let slip by, considering their lack of depth in that area of the pitch. Bringing in Kourbelis could be very similar to their move for Aaron Mooy last summer, which proved to be a transfer masterstroke.
