Celtic have continued to add to their squad over the past four transfer windows under the management of Ange Postecoglou. With Giorgos Giakoumakis on his way out, the club needed to bring in a striker last month. For a long time, they had been linked with Cho Gue-sung, who had impressed a lot at the World Cup and scored a couple of goals as well. But when that failed to materialise, the Hoops signed another South Korean international in the form of Oh Hyeon-gyu.
Oh had been very impressive during his time at Suwon Samsung Bluewings. Just 21 years of age, there is no doubt that he is a less polished player than Cho. But the potential is definitely very high for him as well.
It looks like Oh has been impressing his teammates since he has arrived, and has already made a few appearances off the bench for Celtic. It remains to be seen when he will get his first start for the club.
When recently asked on Twitter, whether the success that Son Heung-min has had since he came to Europe inspire him to leave South Korea and play in a different league, Oh said:
"βYes, since I was a kid, I was inspired by Heung-min playing so well in Europe and making people in Korea proud.β"
Celtic player makes Son claim on Twitter
It is safe to say that Son is one of the greatest players to ever come out of South Korea. He is 30 years of age and has already made more than 100 appearances for his national team.
On the other hand, he is a Premier League legend as well, whose achievements perhaps go a bit under the radar simply because of the fact that he has not won any trophies during his time at Tottenham Hotspur.
There is no doubt though that Son is one of the best players in the world right now. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 139 goals and provided 77 assists in 353 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur till now. If Oh can be half the player as him, Celtic have a star on their hands.
