Celtic have been tremendous in the Premiership this season till now. They currently lead the table by nine points, after 22 games have been played in the league. In that period of time, they have only lost once and drawn another. That means that Ange Postecoglou’s side have dropped just five points till now.
That has also raised hopes that this side could perhaps match or even better the record that Brendan Rodgers’ side had set in the 2016/17 campaign, getting to 106 points.
Of course, if they are to do that then they will need to be near perfect over the remaining 14 games. If Celtic are to get past the 106 point-mark, then they can only afford another draw. Nothing more. They can lose just once, and still match the number. That is going to be very difficult but not entirely impossible, especially when you consider how good they have been till now.
But it is never good to work with such goals in mind, and always better to take each game at a time. And it looks like Postecoglou does not have Rodgers’ record in sight either. As reported by The Herald, the Celtic manager said about the matter:
"“I don’t really set those kind of targets.“If you do that, you kind of put a ceiling on what you can do. If I set the target that we want to beat the team that Brendan had, then what happens if we beat it with two games to spare?“Do the players think then, ‘Well we have done it?’ It’s not the way I work. I never set those targets, I never set goals.“Let’s just be the best we can be and see where that takes us. If it means we fall short of an Invincible team that Brendan created, then it won’t be for the want of trying.”"
Celtic boss sends clear message regarding Rodgers’ record
That might be the best way to move forward as well. If the record comes, then that would be a bonus. But there are bigger things to focus on.
The league title race is not over yet. In fact, there is still a long way to go and the Hoops cannot afford to slip.
On the other hand, there are still a couple of cup competitions to be played as well, with Celtic already making the final of the Scottish League Cup, where they will take on the Rangers. A treble would be much more memorable than any record.
