Celtic tipped to go after player again despite failed bid
Celtic were linked with a long list of players during the January transfer window and appeared to get most of their targets. With Josip Juranovic leaving, they needed to bring in a right-back, which proved to be Alistair Johnston. They strengthened in defensive midfield with Tomoki Iwata, which led to Oliver Abildgaard’s loan being cut short. The same happened with Moritz Jenz, with Yuki Kobayashi arriving. And Oh Hyeon-gyu has been signed as Giorgos Giakoumakis is expected to leave.
For a long while, it had not looked like Oh was Celtic’s primary target up front to replace Giakoumakis though. Instead, most of the rumours linked them with Cho Gue-sung.
The South Korean international had enjoyed a tremendous World Cup, scoring a couple of goals for his national team and helping them reach the last 16 of the competition. Unsurprisingly, that raised interest in him.
Several rumours broke out in January that Celtic had even launched a transfer bid for Cho. But ultimately, the South Korean striker remained at Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, something that most people would not have seen coming, considering the interest in his signature.

A failed attempt to sign Cho might not end Celtic’s interest in the player for good though. As reported by GIVEMESPORT, Pete O’Rourke said:
"“I think there’s real potential still there for Celtic to rekindle their interest in him in the summer.“He’s obviously been a target for Ange Postecoglou and just because he can’t sign him now, I don’t think he will end up finishing his interest in the player as well.”"
A lot of what Celtic do next with regards to striker will depend on how Oh adjusts to the Scottish game and performs for the Hoops over the second half of the season.
On the other hand, Kyogo has been spectacular after the World Cup break and one cannot rule out the idea of big clubs coming for his signature in the summer either.
If Kyogo stays and Oh does well, then it might be unlikely for Celtic to try to sign Cho again in the summer.
