Celtic fans will be very aware of VAR and the controversy that the system has brought with it to Scottish football. The Hoops have come out on the wrong end of them more often than not and the team deserves immense credit for still leading the league by nine points, when you consider just how many decisions have gone against them.

Of course, it is not just Celtic who have been on the wrong end of decisions made with the help of VAR. There have been several other clubs as well.

Aberdeen were the latest, as they saw Ross McCrorie being shown a red card in the seventh minute of their game against St Mirren. They eventually went on to lose 3-1.

The decision was certainly a controversial one. McCrorie was running when he had his path blocked by a St Mirren player, and it appeared that the Aberdeen player’s elbow struck the opposition defender in the face. He was sent off following a VAR review.

Aberdeen release statement and it will interest Celtic

Aberdeen have decided to appeal the red card. The club released a statement on their official website, which went on to read:

"The Club can confirm it has appealed the red card shown to Ross McCrorie during Wednesday night’s cinch Premiership game against St Mirren at Pittodrie.A further update will be provided once we have been notified of the outcome of the appeal."

The situation will interest Celtic, because one of the upcoming games that McCrorie could end up missing due to the red card, if it is upheld, is against the Hoops.

Of course, it will be interesting to see what comes out of it, and one can only hope that the right decision is made after careful inspection.

One thing that is clear is that there needs to be a rethink around VAR in Scotland. It has been a topic of debate everywhere, but the matter has been magnified in the Premiership, with several questionable decisions being made already despite the presence of a system that was expected to reduce them drastically.
