Giorgos Giakoumakis’ Celtic exit saga has dragged on for much longer than anybody could have anticipated. At first it had looked like he was destined to join Urawa Red Diamonds. But then, rumours suggested that Atlanta United had had an offer accepted and he was going to join the MLS side. And there were several more twists in between. Yet, it is deadline day and the Greek striker’s future is still up in the air.

Most fans would have expected an official announcement about his exit today but it looks like that won’t be happening and the Greek forward will be remaining at Celtic Park for a while longer.

Of course, that does not mean that his exit is off. But it seems that a decision is yet to be made about where he will be headed next.

As reported by Football Scotland, Giakoumakis will not leave Celtic tonight. Negotiations are ongoing and the player still has a decision to make. But he will still seal an exit and deadline days elsewhere will allow the Hoops to rubber-stamp the move down the line.

Giakoumakis will not be leaving Celtic on deadline day but exit is still on

It is safe to say that Giakoumakis still seems to be on his way out of Parkhead. And his departure will come as a blow for the Hoops.

He was very important to the club’s Premiership triumph last season and scored almost for fun in the second half of the 2021/22 campaign.

Of course, the Hoops have already signed Oh Hyeon-gyu, and hopefully, he will shine in the Celtic shirt.

Oh certainly has big boots to fill. Even though Giakoumakis might have only been at Celtic for 18 months or so, he has certainly made his presence felt and made an impact, despite not being a starter for the majority of his time at Parkhead.
