Things seem to be getting busy for Celtic as we march towards the close of the January transfer window. While the club got their signings done early, there could be one or more exits to come yet. We have already seen Josip Juranovic, Scott Robertson and Moritz Jenz depart, while Giorgos Giakoumakis is believed to be on the verge of a move to Atlanta United as well. Could another player be on the way out?
Celtic have strengthened their backline in the January transfer window, especially central defence. Yuki Kobayashi is a centre-back, while Tomoki Iwata can play there to great effect as well.
Of course, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt as the established starting duo in the heart of the backline. Thus, could it be time for Stephen Welsh to leave?
As tweeted out by Anthony Joseph, Sheffield Wednesday are interested in signing Welsh on loan until the end of the season. Celtic had been willing to listen to offers for him in this window, but recently cut short Jenz’s loan spell.
English club are interested in signing Celtic player on loan till the end of the season
Welsh was expected to be on his way out of the club in January but nothing has transpired till now. And of course, the exit of Jenz does make things complicated.
Sheffield Wednesday are currently playing in the English League One and are challenging to get promoted to the Championship.
Considering the fact that Welsh has been linked with several top flight clubs from around Europe in the past, it would be a surprise if he did end up in League One.
There is no doubt that on his day, Welsh is a top talent, but he is not expected to get many chances at Celtic this season, as he seems to lack the consistency to be a starter.
