New club make contact to sign Celtic star in January

Giorgos Giakoumakis’ Celtic exit saga has been full of twists and turns, and it has taken another one. Not too long ago, it had been looking like Atlanta United were the favourites to sign the Greek striker but now, they might not even be an option. On the other hand, a new club seem to have set their sights on the 28-year-old.

Giakoumakis was a key player in Celtic’s Premiership triumph last season. Arguably the most important in the second half of the campaign, when he was almost scoring for fun while Kyogo was out injured.

The situation is very different now though. It is believed that Giakoumakis failed to agree terms on a new deal with Celtic. And he has not made a single start after the World Cup break, and an exit is expected to go through this month.

As tweeted out by Giannis Chorianopoulos, Urawa Red Diamonds are the favourites to sign Giakoumakis, even if he prefers European football. On the other hand, Atlanta United seem to be out of the race. But could there be one final twist in the tale?

As reported by La Gazzetta Express, contacts have been established between Anderlecht and Celtic regarding a potential transfer for Giakoumakis.

This is clearly something that not many people could have seen coming, when it was looking like the race to sign the Greek striker was between Urawa Red Diamonds and Atlanta United. But it has been a transfer thriller and this could be an apt twist in the end.

Of course, it remains to be seen if Anderlecht are able to agree a deal with Celtic or not. On the other hand, rumours have suggested that Urawa Red Diamonds already have a deal in place with the Hoops.
