As we enter the final week of the January transfer window, it is safe to say that the Giorgos Giakoumakis Celtic exit saga has dragged on much longer than expected. The Greek striker has been linked with a move away from Parkhead for weeks, yet till now, nothing solid has materialised.
There does not seem to be a lack of interest in his signature though and rumours had broken out earlier that Celtic had already agreed an offer from J League side, Urawa Red Diamonds.
The move to Japan has not happened till now though, and while Urawa Red Diamonds remain in the Giakoumakis race, it is believed that Atlanta United are leading candidates to sign the Greek striker now.
Things seem to have taken an unexpected twist with regards to the transfer though. As reported by MLSsoccer.com, Atlanta United are in talks with Celtic over Giakoumakis but no deal has been reached. A deal is likely to be a loan with a purchase option that would automatically trigger if certain performance-based incentives are met. Such a structure without an initial transfer fee aids the American club’s pursuit as they revamp their squad.
Unexpected twist in the Giakoumakis Celtic exit saga
Thus, it looks like Atlanta United are looking to sign Giakoumakis on an initial loan deal, which will become permanent only if certain performance-based incentives are met by the striker during his time at the club.
It goes without saying that not many people would have been expecting this, and were looking forward to a straight transfer deal involving the Greek striker.
While Giakoumakis leaving in the middle of the season would be a blow for Celtic, the club have already brought in a replacement in the form of Oh Hyeon-gyu from Suwon Samsung Bluewings. Now, it remains to be seen if the Greek striker ends up at Atlanta United or not.
