We have already heard Ange Postecoglou talk about new signing, Oh Hyeon-gyu, being the player that he wanted to strengthen his forward line this transfer window. Now as the South Korean striker opens up more about his move to Parkhead, it is becoming clear that Celtic is very much the team for him.
Oh may have been fourth through the entrance door for Celtic and relatively late in the ongoing winter transfer window, when he signed this week from K League side Suwon Samsung Bluewings, but it seems that he has been waiting on this chance for a long time.
Negotiations to bring Oh to Celtic seemed to drag on and at one point it had seemed like a move was not going to happen, but that’s all behind him now as the South Korean striker has arrived in Glasgow.
Oh’s passion and obvious excitement at the move oozes through his comments, as the new Celtic signing hopes for a strong debut. As reported by Glasgow Live, he said at his Parkhead unveiling:
"“I want to give a good impression on my debut and make it a match that no one will be able to forget.“The manager showed a lot of faith in me to bring me here, and I want to pay him back by scoring lots of goals. From the moment I heard the offer, I always dreamed about coming over to Celtic and I was looking forward to meeting the fans.“I always believed that if I put in good performances in South Korea that I would become a Celtic player, so I have been looking forward to this moment. Since I have been a youth player I have always dreamed about playing for a big European club, that has always been my aim.“I believe I developed well at my former club and this was my time to move on and become a Celtic player. I have always wanted to play in a European league since I visited the UK in 2015. From that moment I knew I wanted to play for one of the big clubs. When Celtic offered I never even had to consider anything else because I knew right away I wanted to come here.”"
Oh seems to be delighted after completing his move to Celtic
Oh’s season in the K League ended before the World Cup and the new campaign isn’t due to start again until late in February. His last competitive game was his South Korean national team debut against Iceland in a pre-World Cup friendly in November.
Oh did go to the World Cup but wasn’t part of their final squad, having stepped aside to allow Son Heung-min to take his place.
It is not clear when Oh will get the chance to make his debut, but he and the fans will surely be hoping that it’s soon. They may all need to be patient though, as he is likely to need a bit more time to build up his fitness and get upto match speed.
