After a few slow and relatively uneventful weeks, the Celtic rumour mill has come to life once again over the past couple of days. Josip Juranovic recently completed a move to Union Berlin. On the other hand, it looks like Moritz Jenz is set to cut short his loan spell at Parkhead and move to Schalke instead, after struggling for playing time. And another player whose future remains up in the air is Giorgos Giakoumakis.
The Greek striker has been linked with a move away from Celtic Park for weeks now and yet, nothing has transpired till now.
But with only around a week left in the January transfer window, something needs to happen and quick. On the other hand, rumours have suggested that Celtic are closing in on the signing of Oh Hyeon-gyu from Suwon Samsung Bluewings, who is being viewed as the replacement for Giakoumakis. And there seems to be some interesting news on the future of the Greek striker.
As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, MLS side Atlanta United are in talks to sign Giakoumakis from Celtic as Designated Player. Urawa Red Diamonds have been leading the race since two weeks but it’s not sealed yet.
The Giakoumakis Celtic exit saga has gotten more interesting
Not too long ago, it was looking like Giakoumakis was destined to head for Urawa Red Diamonds. But now, it looks like the situation has changed a bit.
Atlanta United appear to be in the running to sign the striker as well and it remains to be seen how things transpire.
As things stand, there has been no news of an official bid from Atlanta United although rumours have suggested that an offer from Urawa Red Diamonds has been accepted already. Let’s see what happens ultimately, but Giakoumakis leaving in the middle of the season is a blow for Celtic.
