Celtic made a blistering start to their their winter transfer business by getting deals over the line for Yuki Kobayashi, Alistair Johnston and Tomoki Iwata, before January had even started. Things slowed down a bit after that though, as some things started to drag on and the Hoops appeared to have been dealt one major blow amidst all this.
Cho Gue-sung was believed to have been their number one target at striker this month, after his impressive performances at the World Cup for the South Korea national team as well as at club level with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.
But it looks like Cho is set to remain at his current club for the time being. Yet, it has not taken long for the Hoops to move their sights elsewhere.
As reported by The Scottish Sun, Celtic are set to complete the £2.5 million transfer signing of Oh Hyeon-gyu from Suwon Samsung Bluewings in the coming days. The club have agreed terms with the South Korean striker, who has been given the green light to travel to Glasgow.
Celtic have been handed major transfer boost after Cho blow
Oh is a very highly rated striker coming through the ranks at K League as well, and had an impressive 2022 campaign himself.
It is safe to say that Oh might not be as complete as Cho at this point of time, but one has to remember that the Suwon Samsung Bluewings striker is still just 21 years of age and has already shown plenty of potential. He has appeared once for the South Korean national team as well.
Also, Celtic have shown a tremendous eye when it comes to picking out the right players to fit into Ange Postecoglou’s system of football. Thus, the fans will trust them to get it right once again. Whether Oh will be able to replace the impact of Giorgos Giakoumakis, who is expected to leave this month, remains to be seen.
