Celtic are in need of signing a striker, with less than two weeks left in the January transfer window. The club’s finishing this season has already been criticised and on top of that, Giorgos Giakoumakis is expected to be on his way out this month. Clubs like Urawa Red Diamonds, Atlanta United and Sampdoria have been heavily linked with the Greek forward in recent times.
Celtic were handed a blow in their chase for a striker though, when it emerged that Cho Gue-sung was set to stay at Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. And despite being linked with several other names, it looks like they might now be closing in on another South Korean international.
The player is none other than Oh Hyeon-gyu of Suwon Samsung Bluewings. It was initially believed that Celtic had failed in their attempts to sign the 21-year-old.
But now, as tweeted out by Jason (Hanshin) Lee, Celtic have stepped up their pursuit of Oh and are believed to have put in an offer that is “impossible” to reject. The player is eager for the move and it is up to Suwon Samsung Bluewings now.
Celtic seem to be closing in on signing striker
It goes without saying that Oh could be a good long-term addition for Celtic. He is just 21 years of age and has shown a lot of promise already.
Of course, he is not as polished as someone like Cho would have been, but the potential is still there for all to see.
Whether he will be able to replace the impact of someone like Giakoumakis, who is a proven goalscorer in Scotland, remains to be seen. Of course, nothing is over the line yet and let’s see what Suwon Samsung Bluewings decide to do. One can only hope that Oh is on his way to Parkhead soon.
