Most of Celtic’s transfer business under the management of Ange Postecoglou has involved incomings rather than outgoings. Things could take a turn this January though, with quite a few of their star players being linked with Parkhead exits. Now, let’s see what happens between now and the end of the month.
One player whose future is up in the air right now is Giorgos Giakoumakis. The Greek international has been linked with a long list of clubs and is expected to complete an exit in this window. The problem though is that Celtic do not have a replacement for him.
The club were heavily linked with a move for Cho Gue-sung but now, it looks like the South Korean striker is set to remain at Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. Another striker that Celtic were rumoured to hold an interest in, Casper Tengstedt, has already completed a move to Benfica.
It is hard to imagine that Celtic would let Giakoumakis go, before making sure that they have a replacement coming in. If the Greek striker does leave though, he has been advised to head for the English Championship.
Celtic star told to leave for English Championship club
As reported by Football Insider, Frank McAvennie said:
"“I do not think there is a club there interested in him but, I think it would be ideal.“One of the top Championship clubs in England because that is his game.“I think it would be good for him to go down there. Ange is keeping things quite tight-lipped.“"
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Giakoumakis at Celtic. He has not started a game since the return from the World Cup break, which does seem to point towards him potentially leaving this month.
He has regularly come off the bench though, and even managed to score a goal against Kilmarnock in the Scottish League Cup semi-final.
Letting a player like Giakoumakis leave in the middle of the season would be a major risk for Celtic. And with the Hoops probably failing to sign their top target this month, the best case scenario would be the Greek striker remaining at Parkhead at least till the end of the campaign.
