Celtic managed to defeat Kilmarnock by a 2-0 scoreline in order to book their place in yet another Scottish League Cup final, as they look to defend their title this time around. Daizen Maeda scored on the day, to keep his hot streak going as he is proving a lot of critics wrong with his recent performances. On the other hand, there was another familiar name on the scoresheet after a long time though: Giorgos Giakoumakis.

Rumours have suggested that Giakoumakis is close to a Celtic exit this January, and the fact that he has not started any of the games in recent times does seem to be pointing in that direction as well.

The issue is, things have not really gone Celtic’s way this month when it comes to their search for a striker. Cho Gue-sung looks set to stay at Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. On the other hand, Casper Tengstedt has joined Benfica already.

Both of them were the two strikers who had been most heavily linked with Celtic in recent times. And while there are others that the club are being linked as well, they must consider other options too.

It is believed that Giakoumakis failed to agree terms on a contract extension with the club. There is still a long time left on his current deal though. So perhaps, the Hoops should try to convince the Greek striker to delay his exit till the summer or maybe even reopen negotiations over a deal.

At the end of the day, it is always going to be a risk letting a reliable goalscorer like Giakoumakis leave in the middle of the season and bring someone else in, most probably a player who has never played in Scotland.

Thus, it might not be a bad idea for Celtic to reconsider things at this point. Giakoumakis staying might very well be the best case scenario.
