The Cho Gue-sung transfer saga is now starting to drag on for Celtic. The South Korean striker is believed to be the club’s priority this January and they appear to have launched a transfer bid to sign him from Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors as well. But at the moment, things are looking pretty complicated.

Minnesota United’s offer is believed to be a larger one in terms of initial transfer fee. But Celtic do have top level European football on the table as well, something that the MLS club will never be able to provide Cho.

The third team in the race are rumoured to be Mainz and while there have been some suggestions that they have backed away from the transfer race to sign Cho, it looks like they actually have the best chance of landing him this month.

As reported by Four Four Two Korea (via Daily Record), Cho is willing to remain at his current club if a move to the Bundesliga doesn’t materialise.

Celtic handed worrying news in the race to sign Cho from Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors

It goes without saying that this is worrying news for Celtic, who appear to have Cho at the top of their wishlist in terms of potential striker signings this month.

Celtic definitely need to bring in a striker in the January transfer window, considering that Giorgos Giakoumakis is expected to be headed out of Parkhead in the near future. Thus, not only do the Hoops need another option up front but also someone who has a similar profile to the Greek international and can fill his role in the team.

If Cho is indeed not convinced by the idea of a move to Glasgow, then Celtic cannot afford to waste much more time chasing his signature and should turn their attention towards other targets quickly.
