As we head towards the middle of the January transfer window there’s news of a Celtic player leaving on a loan deal till the end of the ongoing season. The fans are all keen to hear of new signings, especially up front, but they won’t mind seeing a B team player going out on a temporary basis as a step to hopefully get some playing time and develop his career further.

Tobi Oluwayemi is the most highly rated young goalkeeper in the Celtic developmental ranks. The 19-year-old was signed by the club from Tottenham Hotspur in July of 2019 and has represented England at multiple youth levels.

Having appeared regularly for the Celtic B team, Oluwayemi is now heading out on loan in order to find his footing in the senior game.

As reported by Cork City FC’s official website, Oluwayemi has joined the club till the end of June. The change of location and exposure to competitive football should prove a good experience for the young goalkeeper.

Celtic player leaves on loan till the end of June

It has been believed for a while that Oluwayemi has been earmarked as a future Celtic first-team goalkeeper. But of course he has the likes of Joe Hart, Benjamin Siegrist and Scott Bain all ahead of him. Not to forget Conor Hazard whose loan away to HJK Helsinki ended in December.

Clearly with that number of experienced goalkeepers available, the youngster is not expected to get any playing time at Parkhead. But there are going to be changes sooner or later. Hazard’s contract is believed to be running out at the end of this season, Hart, Bain and Oluwayemi all run to the summer of 2024 with Siegrist contracted till the summer of 2026.

Oluwayemi is still very young for the goalkeeper position. And he is still very much one for the future and Celtic will hope his Cork City spell helps secure him a longer deal with the Hoops.
